KULLU

About Kullu...

Located in Himachal Pradesh, the Himalayan Jewel. Kullu was once known as Kulanthpitha 'the end of the habitat able world'. Beyond rise the forbidding heights of the Greater Himalaya, and by the banks of the shining river Beas, lays the fabled 'Silver Valley'. One popular thing about Kullu is the colorful Dussehra festival. Decorated palanquins and processions convey gods and goddesses from temples all over the valley to Kullu, to pay homage to the reigning deity, Raghunathji. A mela springs up during the festival which is celebrated with a great deal of singing, dancing and festivity. Kullu tourism is adorned with many fairs and festivals which offer a brief introduction of the culture of this beautiful region.

The valley of gods, as the Kullu valley has come to be known, is perhaps the most delightful region in the western Himalayas. The valley spreads out its charm on either side of the upper reaches of the river Beas. Running north to south, with the main river the valley is only 80 km long and 2 km at its broadest, yet a fairly wide area is open to the visitors to enjoy the spectacle of picturesque mountain scenery. In the spring Kullu is at its most colorful with pink blossoms and white flowers while the higher slopes are aglow with gorgeous rhododendrons. By December, there is no greenery except the majestic pines and cedars in the forests. In winter the hillsides are flanked in white. Situated on the banks of the Beas, Kullu, the headquarters of the district, serves as a nerve center of the valley and is the starting place for a number of treks. The deodar-fringed grassy huge maidan called Dhalpur, is a stage for many colorful fairs.

The height of Kullu from sea level is 1230 m with a pleasant temperature in summer and cold below 0oC with heavy snow fall in winter. Best season to visit is March to June for relaxation and visiting the places of sightseeing and enjoy short and long excursions as well as climbing and river rafting. Monsoon season starts from July till August. September to November is the best season for trekking, climbing, sightseeing and river rafting.
