Wildlife in Kullu and tourism in Kullu offers numerous wildlife sanctuaries like The Great Himalayan National Park, Kais sanctuary, Kanawar sanctuary, Khokhan sanctuary, Tirthan sanctuary. The woodlands of Kullu preserve a variety of wildlife. The district has five wildlife sanctuaries of which Manali, Kais, Kanawar, Khokhan are in Kullu Valley. These sanctuaries preserve animals like Musk Deer, Common Fox, Leopard, Ibex, Himalayan Tahr, Porcupine, Bear (black & brown), Goral (Nemorhaedus goral), Himalayan Yellow Throated Marten, Langur and Flying Squirrel etc. and pheasants like Cheer Pheasant, Monal, Western Tragopan etc.

Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP)

GHNP is located in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. The park, which was set up in 1984, has a total area of 1,171 square kilometers. The park area originally comprised watershed area of Jiwa, sainj and Tirthan Rivers. The GHNP lies between an elevation of 1,500 and 5,800 meters above the sea level.
The GHNP features over 375 fauna species including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, mollusks and insects. Blue sheep, snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and the Himalayan brown bear are at the higher elevations of 3,500 meters and above. The high altitude animals descend to the lower altitudes in September-November. It is reach in Avifauna also with Ashy Drongo, Pheasants, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Black bulbul, Black-headed Jay, Black and yellow grosbeak, Alpine Accentor, Blue fronted Redstart and Blue Whistling Thrush,

Kanawar sanctuary

This sanctuary is located in Parbati valley of Kullu district. There is a Rest House at Kasol. R.O. wildlife Kasol provides information and help to visitors. Uphill walk along Garahan Nala from Kasol through dense majestic Deodar and Fir forests is enjoyable. This sanctuary has large population of Himalayan Thar in Himalayas and seeing this big goat on high mountain cliffs is dream fulfillment of any wildlife lover.

Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary

It is located about nineteen km from Kullu. Common inhabitants are black bear, leopard, barking deer, goral, musk deer, porcupine and gothu. Besides, numerous birds such as monal, cheer pheasants, kaleej and chakor. The best time to visit is April to June and September to October.
